Generative Design

SeaCloud9 Commercial Development

By Brendon Smith on June 28, 2009

Well I am almost finished with my commercial website development site. You can go to it @ seacloud9.com / brendonsmith.com. I will be offering a variety of services. I still need to communicate with a lawyer and have a contract created but in short I plan on offering website development skills to [...]

Golan Levin
Do you ever wonder where MTV and VH1 get some of their design atheistic? Where here is a hint Golan Levin. He is a multimedia design guru; Golan Levin is one of my favorite web developers. What he does may sound trivial too many but he is able to seamlessly fuse mathematics with design. He uses tool like Processor, Director, and Flash. The art of today is very different from the past (although it certainly borrows a great deal from the past). Painting is a high art but it is ultimately dead. You may ask what does that mean dead? The innovators of today have been fusing code with art principals to create something that literally has a life of its own. Many of the avant garde artist of today create very complex installation pieces. So I guess what I am getting at is todays artist are using todays technology to forge ahead to create something that is uniquely different from anything that has ever been created before. The true nature of the artist is the ability to create a new experience for the viewer. Monet, Picasso, Manet, Van Gogh and many others were viewed by many as non-conformists. They had to justify, define, and push others to get them to see something new. It is easy to except an old classical work and desire to create more, although this does not force innovation. I still love painting and photography. I find myself spending a great deal of spare time fidgeting with code though. Trying new thing trying to use math to see something I have not already seen, or using math to describe something in nature. One can reason that ultimately everything in nature can be explained mathematically, so one would have to believe the language of God is mathematics.

Toxi / Jahshaka

Toxi

Toxi has numerous examples of Generative Code Design. These examples utilize flash, director, and processing. I highly recommend a look at this site it is very thought provoking. He is also kind enough to let you study his code.

Jahshaka what is it? It is an open source tool that competes with final cut pro, motion, and after effects. It has some pretty cool features once you get over the clunky interface. I would highly recommend taking a look at this tool to anyone interested in video editing. After all you cannot beat the price.

Generative Code Design

By on September 1, 2005

On the topic of generative code design:

I am a firm believer that one encounters god through nature. With that being said I like to carefully study the intricacies of nature. If you take a very careful look at nature you see patterns and geometric shapes that are repeated these patterns are referred as fractals. You can see fractals in tree leaves, tree rings, in butterfly wing patterns, flowers, etc.. When you combine fractals or create fractals out of code loops you can create some very stunning graphics and interactive programs. This is a new phenomenon in combining art with technology. I recently saw an art show at the Hillmer Art Gallery and met the artist Gary Day. I would strongly recommend going to his show if this subject matter intrigues you. I also especially liked how he mentioned the circle being a symbol of eternity. Man/Woman created the square but god created the circle.

Generative: gen·er·a·tive Audio pronunciation of "generative" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (jnr–tv, –r-)
adj.

1. Having the ability to originate, produce, or procreate.
2. Of or relating to the production of offspring.

Fractal: frac·tal Audio pronunciation of "Fractal" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (frktl)
n.

A geometric pattern that is repeated at ever smaller scales to produce irregular shapes and surfaces that cannot be represented by classical geometry. Fractals are used especially in computer modeling of irregular patterns and structures in nature.

Flight404

By on August 29, 2005

This group consists of action script, java, shockwave gurus. I enjoy how flight404 uses a combination of art, mathematics, and technology. Flight404 uses a blend of media and code to artificially simulate occurrences in nature. Flight404 is an excellent example of generative design. Think of flight404 as an interactive art gallery. They also let you study their code! So Flight404 will be this weeks site of the week.
